When trying to determine what God's will is for our lives, the tendency is to seek His will only in the large matters or crises of life. I encourage you to seek and obey the will of God in the every day, common affairs and duties of life.
Many times, we only ask God for discernment in matters that are beyond us; matters beyond our understanding and wisdom. Although this is important, we are missing a vital piece of the puzzle. The small, every day tasks are an opportunity to know and obey the will of God and draw closer to Him through that obedience.
Every moment of every day, you have a choice to make, with only two options. One, you can chose what would please God and bring Him glory. Or two, you can ignore God's desire and do what you want--what is easier or more comfortable. There is no magic answer for every decision. It is a matter of searching the heart of God and obeying Him. Pick any decision you make in a day. There is always the option of your way or God's way. Whether it is snapping at your extremely annoying co-worker or being kind; losing your temper with your kids in frustration or smiling; venting about your hard day to your spouse or giving them a hug and a kiss; opening a bottle of wine to cope or corking it; retreating into depression due to circumstances or doing something thoughtful for someone...all of these decisions are opportunities to do what God desires. Following after God's desires in these small situations will makes all the difference in your relationship with Him. We want to please Him because we love Him. But we tend to think we only need to do that in important, major decisions. Wrong. He is interested in the every day, commonality and monotonous tasks of ordinary lives.
Every day we are faced with dilemmas, difficulties, uncertainties and doubts. Of course we want to make the right decisions. But many times, our habit and mode of survival is to solve our problems our way and trudge through another day. We are conflicted because we want to please our boss with our hard work and a job well done. We want to be good parents to our kids. We want to show our spouses we love them. And of course, we want to please Jesus. Have you ever wondered where all of those opportunities are to do just that? They exist in the every day, common choices and tasks.
If we commit to obeying God's desires in all things, He will honor your commitment and your life will begin to radically change. You must commit completely, without reservation, to serve Him in those ordinary daily choices and tasks. Your relationship with Him will explode into refreshing, exhilarating hope. It doesn't mean you will not make any mistakes or might make the wrong choice. That doesn't concern Him. What does concern Him is your motives; your heart. Are you merely wearing a facade, or are you devoted to Him? View each choice and decision your make throughout your day as an opportunity to serve Him in the small.
